Historic murals

Middlesbrough General mural

Patients, visitors and staff can now take a step back in time on the new hospital mall.

Two life-size murals charting the histories of Middlesbrough General Hospital and North Riding Infirmary adorn the walls at The James Cook University Hospital and in the new hub area at the Friarage Hospital showing the history and development of the hospital. They feature a historical timeline, photographs of staff (past and present), patients, buildings, original plaques and equipment.

Woodgate design – husband-and-wife team Tony and Karen Van de Bospoort – specialise in large permanent displays portraying the history of hospitals, produced the murals.

As a trust we hold a great deal of affection for these hospitals and were determined they would not be forgotten. The artists’ brief was to create something informative, stimulating and entertaining.

This was very much a collaborative project with the local community and a huge thank you goes to everyone who sent in their treasured photographs and memorabilia as they really helped to bring the murals to life.
