Clinical profile: Mr Bhavan Rai was appointed as a consultant urological surgeon with a specialist interest in robotic surgery, minimally-invasive surgery, and urological oncology in 2016. He completed basic and higher specialist training in surgery and urology in Scotland, and is fully trained in core and emergency urology. He is one of very few urologists in the UK to have undertaken double high-volume fellowship training in robotic surgery; firstly, in the world-famous University of Leipzig Urology Clinic under the mentorship of Professor Uwe Stolzenberg, who pioneered minimally-invasive radical prostatectomy. And, subsequently, as part of a competitively-selected prestigious nationally-accredited Royal College of Surgeons of England and British Association of Urological Surgeons Fellowship at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage. His extensive experience to date has led to expertise in the surgical management of prostate, kidney and bladder cancers using open surgical techniques and over a 500-case experience in minimally-invasive approaches including robotic renal and pelvic cancer surgery.
Academic profile: Mr Rai has published extensively on urological and surgical research and has over 100 peer-reviewed articles, national and international research presentations and authored text-book chapters. His current research interests include outcomes research, systematic reviews in uro-oncology, surgical education, benign prostate disease and endourology.  Mr Rai has developed a national and international reputation for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of technological outcomes in urology, thereby helping to develop some of the highest level of evidence for urological surgery.  He has also been sub-investigator for several regional and national trials.  His latest research updates can been seen here.  He reviews articles for several international journals.  Mr Rai is passionate about undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training in urology.  He has been a faculty member in international laparoscopic courses for prostatectomy and nephrectomy, and national courses in core (endoscopic) urology. He is an educational supervisor for urology trainees in South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
