Children's services

The way we provide children’s services at the Friarage Hospital changed in October 2014 following a public consultation into the future of children’s and maternity services carried out by Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group.

We now run a short-stay paediatric assessment unit (SSPAU) which will assess, monitor and treat children who have been referred to the unit by their GP or who have open access arrangements in place.

SSPAU temporary opening hours:CHILD2

  • Monday to Friday – 10am to 8pm
  • Weekends and Bank Holidays – 10am to 7pm

SSPAU opening from April 2016:

  • Mondays to Fridays – 9am to 7pm
  • Weekends and Bank Holidays – Closed

Currently we are not making the best use of the skills – or time – of staff working on the unit based on the numbers of children using the service. These changes give us an opportunity to support and strengthen the children’s nursing community team at the Friarage Hospital. We anticipate the impact on patients will be minimal as very few children attend the unit after the new opening times.

Children who are likely to need an overnight stay in hospital (or longer) will be cared for at another hospital such as The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, Darlington Memorial Hospital or one near to your home.

We continue to provide

  • Children’s outpatient servicesCHILD1
  • All planned day surgery
  • Community paediatric nursing services
