The motor neurone disease team at The James Cook University Hospital have been named as NHS Heroes for always going that extra mile for their patients. Colin Pearson and Sonia Henman of the MND Association nominated the team on Ward 25 to thank them for “providing a lifeline” to those with MND from across Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire.

Mario starts a new life and health career in Nepal

Charge nurse Mario Hughes has left his job to dedicate his time and medical expertise on a life-changing venture in Nepal.

Mario, a familiar face in cardiothoracic surgery at The James Cook University Hospital, took the decision to resign after 25 years working in hi-tech intensive care units to set up an intensive care unit in a hospital in Pokhara.

Tree tribute to popular nurse Julie

Family, friends and colleagues have planted a loving tribute to Middlesbrough nurse Julie Jones.

Julie passed away in November last year at the age of 51 after losing her battle with breast cancer, but the memory of her bubbly and always positive personality will not be forgotten after her family planted a magnolia tree in the garden of the Carter Bequest Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Rick carries Olympic torch for Stockton

Healthcare assistant and athletics coach, Rick Betts, will carry the Olympic torch on Sunday 17 June on one of the Stockton legs of its journey. Rick, who works in the operating theatres at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, was nominated for this very special honour by the parents of one of the many young athletes he coaches at Middlesbrough’s Clairville Stadium.

Kim Barstow, staff nurse at The James Cook University Hospital, was named as the Nightingale Awards winner 2012. This year the theme of the event was “I see the person in every patient” so it was quite fitting that the overall winner was Kim of ward 3 who has worked hard to enhance the experience of patients with dementia and offer support to their families.
