Flu champions at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are celebrating after vaccinating 80.4% of frontline healthcare staff this year – a trust record!
A doctor and two nurses from South Tees were part of a recent trip to the Battambang Referral Hospital with a charity that was set up on Teesside. Transform Healthcare Cambodia was set up to respond to the training needs of medical and nursing colleagues in Cambodia. In the late 1970s Cambodia suffered under the Pol Pot regime where many doctors and educators were either killed or put to work on the land. Since that time the country has been rebuilding its health services.
A UK team, led by consultants from the heart and lung surgery team at The James Cook University Hospital, gave up their holidays to take part in a life-saving mission to Ghana. Surgeons, cardiologists, intensive care practitioners, anaesthetists and a heart bypass technician were among those who spent a week at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital from 23 February to 1 March.
Advanced nurse practitioner in radiology Helen Scullion is celebrating after being named Nurse of the Year at a prestigious national awards ceremony. Helen was presented with the Nursing Times Award at a glittering event in London hosted by TV and radio presenter Gethin Jones. The accolade comes just months after Helen was listed as one of health and care’s Top 70 Stars as part of national celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS.
Twelve volunteers from cardiac surgery teams on Teesside are set to fly out to Ghana to perform a series of life-saving heart operations. Their mission has received overwhelming support from colleagues at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust – even those who are not going on the trip are gearing up to help raise £30,000 to fund equipment and medical supplies.
