Praise for heart team’s international research work

Cardiologists at Teesside’s biggest hospital have been praised for their role in a major international study looking at the effectiveness of different treatments for patients with Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD).

The cardiothoracic team, led by Dr Mark de Belder at The James Cook University Hospital, were praised by New York University-based leaders of the ISCHEMIA trial, a major international, multicentre randomised trial researching the best way to manage the condition.

A successful project to provide intravenous (IV) antibiotics to patients with a long-term lung condition in their own homes is set to benefit dozens of others with different health conditions. The cutting-edge service improvement enterprise looked at how providing IV antibiotic therapy to patients in their own homes rather than as inpatients in hospital could improve both the patient experience and also reduce costs.

The widow of a “true gentleman” who stayed at her husband’s bedside for four nights as he succumbed to leukaemia has thanked specialist palliative care nurses who made his final days so comfortable – as well as looking after her too. Carole Stiff, 78, said doctors, nurses and the “sweet” ward clerk on Ward 15 were “more like family than complete strangers,” supporting and comforting her at the same time as looking after her beloved Harry.

New recruits appointed thanks to Love Nursing

Love nursing open days at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and The Friarage in Northallerton have proved such a success, they are set to return in the early autumn. A total of seven nurses were offered jobs with South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a result of the July open days – including five at James Cook and two at The Friarage.

Thanks to everyone who attended The James Cook University Hospitals, for the first of two Love Nursing open day events.

Nurses were welcomed on a tour of wards and enjoyed chatting to senior nursing colleagues over coffee – with opportunities for on-the-spot interviews for suitable candidates for existing vacancies.
