The Friarage opens new lung surgery service

An initial 150 patients per year are set to benefit from a new £95,000 investment in new lung surgery services at The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. New specialist imaging equipment, increased theatre capacity for lung surgery and outpatient clinics will now be provided at the North Yorkshire hospital, benefitting patients from across Hambleton and Richmondshire and further afield, who currently face a long journey to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The transformation of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which today upgraded the Trust’s rating from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’, with several areas of outstanding practice identified.

Praise for heart team’s international research work

Cardiologists at Teesside’s biggest hospital have been praised for their role in a major international study looking at the effectiveness of different treatments for patients with Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD).

The cardiothoracic team, led by Dr Mark de Belder at The James Cook University Hospital, were praised by New York University-based leaders of the ISCHEMIA trial, a major international, multicentre randomised trial researching the best way to manage the condition.

The cutting-edge service improvement enterprise looked at how providing IV antibiotic therapy to patients in their own homes rather than as inpatients in hospital could improve both the patient experience and also reduce costs.

The widow of a “true gentleman” who stayed at her husband’s bedside for four nights as he succumbed to leukaemia has thanked specialist palliative care nurses who made his final days so comfortable – as well as looking after her too. Carole Stiff, 78, said doctors, nurses and the “sweet” ward clerk on Ward 15 were “more like family than complete strangers,” supporting and comforting her at the same time as looking after her beloved Harry.
