The NHS flag will be flown above Middlesbrough Town Hall until the end of the coronavirus outbreak in a show of solidarity to all those working to keep people safe.
The iconic blue and white logo is joined by a rainbow flag to symbolise the community spirit shown by so many people during the Covid-19 crisis.
Middlesbrough’s deputy mayor Councillor Antony High said he hoped the gesture would shows the town’s appreciation for those working in key worker roles.
He said: “I can’t praise highly enough the staff at the NHS – they are true superheroes in a town full of heroes right now.
“Everyone working on the frontline during this crisis are showing themselves to be the most selfless and inspirational people among us.
Councillor High added: “This gesture is to show to say thank you from the people of Middlesbrough and to symbolise that we all stand united during these difficult times.”
