An intrepid trio are tackling the gruelling 146 mile coast-to-coast cycle ride from Whitehaven to Sunderland to help future cancer patients and to thank the caring hospital staff at James Cook for looking after loved ones.
Adrian Robson’s wife, Claire, has had more than her fair share of ill health. Accompanied by Claire’s dad, Derek Walker and close family friend David Cowdell he is taking on this challenging cycle ride to thank the dedicated staff from the department of radiotherapy and oncology’s Endeavour unit and chemotherapy day unit – the two hospital department’s where she is receiving treatment.
Claire, 28, from Thornaby was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year following a smear test. Determined to fight the disease she is undergoing treatment at the moment.
Following her experience Claire wants to help raise awareness and highlight the importance of smear tests and not putting them off especially in the young.
Adrian said: “Following Claire’s diagnosis and the start of her treatment, the family have been so supportive to both of us. We were also both blown away by how caring, professional and nice the hospital staff are – always willing to just chat or answer any concerns we had.
“We cannot praise them highly enough and they are a great credit and asset to the hospital. This makes the hard journey Claire is on that little bit easier. We wanted to help people in the same situation which is why we are doing the cycle ride.”
David and Laura Notman’s son David aged 8, is also keen to help his auntie Claire. Known as ‘little David’ to avoid confustion, kind hearted David is doing a mini cycle from Robin Hoods bay to Whitby along the coastline of about 6 miles.
He is so excited he is going to help Claire get better and is hoping to raise £50 to £100 to pay for treatment or towards a machine. The whole family are so proud of him and Claire was touched by his wanting to help.
