Dave Speight is a busy man. He is sales director, who works long hours, many of them on the road, and only visits his GP when he knows he’s ‘unwell’. But Dave received ‘a wake-up call’ after the company arranged a free healthy heart check run by the local NHS cardiovascular screening service.

Storytellers chair for Cleveland unit

Children at the Cleveland unit at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough are having lots of fun and improving their early learning skills at the same time thanks to a special storytellers chair. The Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club wanted to take on a project which would benefit children using the unit and they designed and created the special 6-foot hand crafted chair which is now a focal point in the nursery’s outdoor play area.

Improving care for dementia patients

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation trust is inviting relatives and carers to help improve hospital care for patients with dementia. The trust is holding a patient experience event and is encouraging members of the public to come along and give their views.

State-of-the-art neuroimaging centre opens

Paralympic gold medallist, Lily van den Broecke, will open the Durham University neuroimaging centre at The James Cook University Hospital on Friday 23 November 2012. A joint project between Durham University and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the centre will provide state of the art facilities for biomedical research and the very latest technology for patients. Durham University will use the centre to maintain and advance its world reputation for human brain research and the new scanner will be used by clinicians at The James Cook University Hospital for diagnostic scanning and for joint research projects between the hospital and university.

Trust launches Green Choices campaign

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2015 and as part of the trust’s carbon management plan, it is holding an environmental awareness event, to launch ‘Green Choices’, at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough on Thursday 22 November between 11.30am and 3.30pm.

Christmas stars appeal

Patients, staff and visitors are invited to do their bit for Macmillan Cancer Support this Christmas by hanging a personal message on the Christmas tree at The James Cook University Hospital. The Christmas Stars appeal invites anyone who has lost a loved one to place a message of remembrance on the Christmas tree in the atrium at James Cook.

Going blue for World Diabetes Day

The children’s diabetes teams at The James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage Hospital are urging schools and work places to go blue for World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2012. Staff at both hospitals are planning a number of events to raise awareness of diabetes and raise vital funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and their hospital trust funds which directly benefit local children and young people.
