State-of-the-art neuroimaging centre opens

Paralympic gold medallist, Lily van den Broecke, will open the Durham University neuroimaging centre at The James Cook University Hospital on Friday 23 November 2012. A joint project between Durham University and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the centre will provide state of the art facilities for biomedical research and the very latest technology for patients. Durham University will use the centre to maintain and advance its world reputation for human brain research and the new scanner will be used by clinicians at The James Cook University Hospital for diagnostic scanning and for joint research projects between the hospital and university.

Trust launches Green Choices campaign

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2015 and as part of the trust’s carbon management plan, it is holding an environmental awareness event, to launch ‘Green Choices’, at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough on Thursday 22 November between 11.30am and 3.30pm.

Christmas stars appeal

Patients, staff and visitors are invited to do their bit for Macmillan Cancer Support this Christmas by hanging a personal message on the Christmas tree at The James Cook University Hospital. The Christmas Stars appeal invites anyone who has lost a loved one to place a message of remembrance on the Christmas tree in the atrium at James Cook.

Going blue for World Diabetes Day

The children’s diabetes teams at The James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage Hospital are urging schools and work places to go blue for World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2012. Staff at both hospitals are planning a number of events to raise awareness of diabetes and raise vital funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and their hospital trust funds which directly benefit local children and young people.

A charity night in memory of popular SSI worker Keith Bowler has raised more than £4,000 for the Cardiothoracic Trust Fund at The James Cook University Hospital. Keith attended the cardiac rehabilitation unit at the Middlesbrough hospital in 2006 and his wife Jan wanted to give something back to the unit to thank the staff for their support.

Commendation for care team

The trust’s specialist palliative care team has been commended at the 2012 Macmillan Excellence Awards. The Hambleton and Richmondshire specialist palliative care team from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received a commendation in the team awards – for teams who have made a significant contribution to their service or produced an exemplary piece of work.

Heart surgeon named Europe’s top trainer

When it comes to training heart experts of the future cardiothoracic surgeon Simon Kendall has been named as the best in Europe. Simon, who is based at the heart unit at The James Cook University Hospital, has been awarded the Leonardo Da Vinci Award for Training Excellence 2012 by the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS).

The children’s waiting areas at the Friarage Hospital’s accident and emergency department have been transformed into a magical wonderland thanks to the Rotary Club of Wensleydale. Lovely countryside scenes including the seashore and local points of interest now adorn the walls of accident and emergency’s paediatric waiting area and two treatment areas have fascinating underwater scenes featuring sea life and creatures.

After Jill Gristwood suffered a heart attack, her husband Tim raised funds for the ward she was treated on and backs the Healthy Heart Check campaign. The cardiovascular screening programme is inviting employers across the Teesside area to engage in setting up a workplace ‘Healthy Heart’ screening event for their employees.
