Can you lend a hand – volunteers wanted

The Macmillan cancer information and support centre at the Friarage Hospital is looking for volunteers with an interest in helping people and who can spare some time to help with their important work.

The centre at the Northallerton hospital offers a relaxed, friendly and confidential environment and is open Monday to Thursday from 9am until 4pm. Anyone whose life has been affected by cancer is welcome to drop in to share their concerns with one of the dedicated team of staff and trained volunteers.

Mario starts a new life and health career in Nepal

Charge nurse Mario Hughes has left his job to dedicate his time and medical expertise on a life-changing venture in Nepal.

Mario, a familiar face in cardiothoracic surgery at The James Cook University Hospital, took the decision to resign after 25 years working in hi-tech intensive care units to set up an intensive care unit in a hospital in Pokhara.

A SPECIAL parade will celebrate the Friarage Hospital’s continued links with the military and honour service personnel.

Over 120 personnel from the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (Northallerton) will march past the hospital accompanied by the Scots Dragoon Guard pipes at the event on Tuesday 3 July 2012.

Phil Davis had a successful kidney transplant last year. He was so pleased with the treatment and care he received, he promised himself that he would repay the hospitals concerned with a fundraiser that would challenge him to complete.

Phil, a director with Thornaby-based filtration specialists John Morfield Ltd, was referred to the renal investigation unit at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he was informed that he was suffering from deteriorating kidney function.

A new £4.5million general HDU (high dependency unit) has opened its doors to patients at The James Cook University Hospital.

Caring for people who are seriously ill has become a large and complex part of healthcare and requires many specialist skills to ensure we provide the best possible care for some of our most sickest – and vulnerable – patients.

£8,000 MND donation

Overnight oxygen monitoring equipment and other respiratory measuring and monitoring equipment will be available for MND and other neurology patients at The James Cook University Hospital – thanks to the fundraising efforts of Mike Findley MBE.

Mike, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease seven years ago, has put aside his own battle to tirelessly raise money and awareness into the muscle wasting condition.

Friends donate rehabilitation equipment

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy teams based at Redcar Primary Care Hospital, have been showered by a very generous donation.
The local Friends group, who started off supporting the former Stead Memorial Hospital in the town, used some of the funds they have raised to buy rehabilitation equipment that will be used by the patients in the new hospital by the two teams.

Endeavour Unit is highly commended in building awards

The Endeavour Unit, a state-of-the-art cancer unit, has been highly commended in the Constructing Excellence in the North East Awards.

The unit is one of the first hospitals in the world to treat patients on three leading edge linear accelerators – machines used to give radiation treatment to patients – and also houses a CT scanner and a new outpatient suite.
