Diabetes education for grandparents

Following on from World Diabetes Day on Thursday (14 November), the children’s diabetes team at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is holding a grandparents’ educational coffee morning the next day.

blood glucose monitorAlthough predominantly aimed at grandparents this event, which is being held at MIMA in Central Square, Middlesbrough between 10am and noon on Friday 15 November, is open to the extended family members, friends and child minders of any child or young person with type 1 diabetes.

Attendees will receive first-hand education relating to diabetes from members of the diabetes team. The morning will include education regarding the aims of diabetes management, recognising and treating ‘hypos’ and managing ‘hypers’ in a relaxed informal environment.

The team will ensure that there is an opportunity to get practical hands-on experience with: blood glucose and blood ketone testing; insulin pumps; carbohydrate counting and expert meters. During the morning guests will also be able to chat with other guests, grandparents, families and friends can enjoy light refreshments.

The aim of the event will be to provide guests with new information and/or an update to increase their confidence of caring for their grandchild, niece, nephew, cousin, godchild or friend’s child.
