Put your best foot forward – falls awareness

Posted on in Health improvement, Services

Are you, or is someone you know, at risk of falling?  Would you like to know more about services available in your area?

As part of Age UK’s falls awareness week, South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s falls team is holding a health promotion event to get people to put their ‘best foot forward’ by keeping their feet healthy to prevent falls in later life.

Foot conditions can result in foot pain, which in turn can cause problems with balance, walking and sensation in the feet – all of which can lead to falls.

With around 30% of over 65s and 50% of those aged over 80 falling every year, Age UK is calling on older people to attend local activities during falls awareness week to learn how to prevent falls and keep feet healthy all year round.

As well as keeping feet in good shape, the event, which will be held on Wednesday 19 June between 1pm and 3pm at the 25k Community Centre, Ayton Drive, Redcar, will show that there are a whole range of simple things that can reduce the risk of a fall.

There will be a range of information stands from local services, including Podiatry, Care and Repair, Homecall and Telecare, Age UK, Carers Together, MIND and Welfare Rights.

Older people and health professionalsfrom across Redcar and Cleveland are invited to come along to find out what they can do to help prevent falls and improve later life.

Louise Egan, senior physiotherapist, falls team, said: “Although the event theme is healthy feet, we hope to provide a whole host of advice and information to help older people remain safe and healthy.

“Information stands from local services will raise awareness of the support available for the older person and, on the day, we will be able to give advice on things like exercise and bone health, carry out walking stick MOT’s and people will be able to have a healthy foot check from the podiatrist.”

Events held in support of falls awareness week are crucial in helping everyone understand how to reduce the risk of falling and how to maintain mobility and independence as we grow older.   For further information on South Tees’s event contact the falls team on 01642 944070.

Age UK’s falls awareness week 2013 runs from Monday 17 to Friday 21 June 2013 and aims to highlight how important it is for everyone to keep their feet healthy in order to maintain mobility and independence throughout life.
