Smokers who light up in vehicles with children present face £50 fine from today – but the penalty could be far worse, as little ones face increased risk of serious illness. That’s the message from Public Health England and Fresh Smoke Free North East today, as Stoptober begins on the same day a new law banning smoking in vehicles transporting under 18s comes into force.

THE midwife-led maternity centre at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton has been praised by UNICEF’s UK baby friendly initiative, for the promotion of breastfeeding. The centre met all of the criteria relating to Stage 3 accreditation and now has the same level of accolade as the maternity unit at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
When the children’s diabetes team at James Cook put a post on Facebook asking for volunteers to help with a pamper day for teenage girls with diabetes they were overwhelmed by the response they received. Around 17 girls attended the full day event which included a free nail treatment, the chance to meet other teenagers with diabetes and useful tips on how to manage their condition.
