Stepping out for the neonatal team

Devoted dad Roy Willis is set to lead a 22-mile walk from Saltburn to Whitby to thank the neonatal team that saved his little boy’s life. Baby Dominic was born 14 weeks premature in October 2012 weighing just 2lb 3oz. For three months the neonatal team at The James Cook University Hospital worked hard taking care of him and keeping him alive, saving his life as many as five or six times a day.

Boro stars kickstart festive celebrations

Boro players ensured young patients on the children’s wards at James Cook had a Christmas to remember when they turned up at the hospital with bags full of presents and MFC merchandise. The players chatted to the youngsters and their families and signed autographs.

Panto beamed to hospital wards

Children at The James Cook Hospital can enjoy a panto without even leaving their beds on Saturday. Newcastle Theatre Royal’s festive show, Aladdin, is set to be beamed for free to all 8,500 hospital bed TV screens in the region giving thousands of patients the chance to watch the show.

Going blue for World Diabetes Day

The children’s diabetes teams at The James Cook University Hospital and the Friarage Hospital are urging schools and work places to go blue for World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2012. Staff at both hospitals are planning a number of events to raise awareness of diabetes and raise vital funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and their hospital trust funds which directly benefit local children and young people.

Joanne Wombwell went into labour at just 23 weeks and five days so she was rushed from Chesterfield to Middlesbrough to give her twins the best chance of survival. Joanne and Tony were so impressed with the care and support they received that they nominated the neonatal team as NHS Heroes – A new national scheme designed to recognise the great work that individuals and teams do every day in the NHS.

Hospital fish tanks get a revamp

Young pet lovers at The James Cook University Hospital are in for a treat when pet store colleagues visit their ward on Thursday 4 October.

Ward manager Pippa Smith recently contacted the team at Pets at Home Middlesbrough to see if they would help maintain the two fish tanks located in the children’s ward.
