Home for MRI scanner as #MyReasonIs appeal takes off

A home has been found for a brand new MRI scanner at The Friarage Hospital, as the final phase of a £2m fundraising campaign for the equipment gathers pace. The potentially lifesaving Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner – used to detect numerous conditions in almost any part of the body – will be based at the Northallerton Hospital’s former special care baby unit – once the remaining £500,000 needed to secure it has been raised.

A warm-hearted Grandad is set to become a social media sensation at the age of 85, after launching a new Twitter campaign in the final push to give The Friarage Hospital its own MRI scanner. Bill, a retired prison service worker and well-known, friendly face at The Friarage, has raised a massive £6,200 for the Northallerton hospital’s MRI Scanner appeal in less than a year, initially selling car raffle tickets, before going on to hold a regular tombola stall of his own.

Friarage maternity unit promotes Breastfeeding Awareness Week

Midwives are opening the doors of Friarage maternity unit on Tuesday 21 June in support of National Breast Feeding Awareness Week. A tea party has been organised between 1pm and 3pm which is aimed at women who are breast feeding and also pregnant ladies.

Midwife professionals and healthcare assistants will be at the tea party to offer support and answer any queries people may have.

Top scores in national patient survey

The results of the Care Quality Commission’s annual survey of inpatients have been published today (8 June 2016) and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been ranked among the best performing trusts in two areas. Responses to the adult inpatient survey 2015 were received from 612 patients aged 16 and above who had stayed in hospital for at least one night – a response rate of 52% which was higher than the national average of 47%.

New technology helps patients sleep soundly

The new wireless technology remotely monitors patients on home therapy who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea interrupts patients’ breathing during sleep, which results in restless nights and tiredness and has long term health implications.

The Friarage Hospital’s stoma care department is holding an open day for ostomy patients at The Golden Lion Hotel, Northallerton. To be held on Tuesday 24 May 2016 from 11am to 2pm in the Yorkshire Suite, Golden Lion Hotel, High Street, Northallerton, the open day is a great opportunity for patients to meet with representatives from stoma manufacturers and view the most up to date products including support garments and underwear suitable for ostomy patients.
