True diamonds – celebrating 60 years of Friends of the Friarage

In 1957 the Friends of the Friarage – then known as the League of Friends – were formed to ‘support the work of the Northallerton hospitals by means of voluntary assistance.’ Now in their 60th year, the Friends are celebrating their Diamond Jubilee having raised in excess of £5million for the Friarage Hospital and the local community.

Friarage Hospital’s medical & surgical assessment unit shortlisted for national award

A combined medical and surgical assessment unit at the Friarage Hospital – which has reduced admissions to surgical wards by more than a third – has been shortlisted in the ‘acute service redesign’ category of the HSJ’s annual ‘Value in Healthcare Awards’. The winners will be announced in May 2017.

Harmonica player David delights with tunes and a cheque!

A harmonica player delighted patients, staff and visitors at The Friarage Hospital with tunes and a cheque for £1,000 – raised through concerts and CD sales. Talented David Hewison-Sandyford, 65, of Bedale, brought his unusual harmonica collection to the Northallerton Hospital hub and entertained people enjoying a coffee as well as stopping passers by in their tracks with his musical skills.

The Friarage opens new lung surgery service

An initial 150 patients per year are set to benefit from a new £95,000 investment in new lung surgery services at The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton. New specialist imaging equipment, increased theatre capacity for lung surgery and outpatient clinics will now be provided at the North Yorkshire hospital, benefitting patients from across Hambleton and Richmondshire and further afield, who currently face a long journey to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
