Farmer puts the bar in barn with night of live music

A North Yorkshire farmer is opening up his barn to members of the public for the seventh year running, to raise funds for Friends of The Friarage. The annual Barn That Rocks event has become a labour of love for Peter Fall, 70, and wife, Barbara, who now combine the daily chores that come with running the Grazingnook Farm, near Patrick Brompton, close to Bedale, with organising an annual musical extravaganza.

New MRI scanner opens at the Friarage

A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner is now up and running at the Friarage Hospital – thanks to the phenomenal support of the people of North Yorkshire. This month, the radiology team scanned their first patients on the diagnostic equipment which, when fully operational, will treat 22 patients a day, seven days a week.

The opening is a milestone for South Tees Hospitals Charity which launched a fundraising campaign to bring a scanner to the Northallerton hospital and has, to date, raised in excess of £1.4million. his includes £500,000 pledged by the Friends of the Friarage who have generously supported the Appeal in partnership with the Charity.

When he was diagnosed with the incurable, progressive neurological condition Parkinson’s Disease at the age of just 41, Simon Laverick, 47 “allowed himself a fortnight to cry”.

But now he believes the diagnosis was just part of a new chapter in his life. At the start of Parkinson’s Awareness Week, he shares his inspirational story in a bid to give hope to other sufferers – and say thank you to the Parkinson’s Advanced Symptom Unit (PASU) that has been a “lifeline”.

When self-employed roofer and proud grandad Ken Bashford received an email from Prostate Cancer UK inviting him to take part in local celebrity Jeff Stelling’s latest marathon effort to fight the disease, he was “over the moon”. It was a much-welcomed high point in what has been a rollercoaster ride for the 60-year-old, from Marske, since being diagnosed with prostate cancer himself following a simple blood test in May 2015.

True diamonds – celebrating 60 years of Friends of the Friarage

In 1957 the Friends of the Friarage – then known as the League of Friends – were formed to ‘support the work of the Northallerton hospitals by means of voluntary assistance.’ Now in their 60th year, the Friends are celebrating their Diamond Jubilee having raised in excess of £5million for the Friarage Hospital and the local community.
