Thanks to 3,457 patients for our best year in R&D

A massive “thank you” is being issued to 3,457 patients and more than 200 staff, after South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust enjoyed a record year in Research & Development. The year 2016 to 2017 became South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s most successful in R&D to date, as the Trust boasted a 17% increase in the number of patients taking part in clinical trials compared with the previous year.

Patients with Macular Degeneration are invited to attend a special awareness day at The James Cook University Hospital – and discover how they can make the best use of their eyesight for many years to come. When they are faced with the news they have macular degeneration, in which the central vision deteriorates due to general wear and tear and lifestyle factors, many patients worry they are going blind.

Target Ovarian Cancer is coming to Middlesbrough for an event to help patients and carers affected by ovarian cancer. Trust staff are supporting the event and are trying to encourage as many patients as possible to attend the event at the Riverside stadium on 22 September, 10am to 4.30pm.

James Cook consultants and surgeons support Tour de Yorkshire

Consultants and surgeons from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust came out to support Tour de Yorkshire cyclists as they whizzed past The James Cook University Hospital on Marton Road. The Vascular and Endovascular surgery department joined forces with the trust’s Specialist Weight Management Service, The Circulation Foundation and colleagues from South Tees Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to serve up tasty and heart healthy Mediterranean treats to the crowds who came out to cheer on the cyclists.

Car smoking ban coincides with Stoptober

Smokers who light up in vehicles with children present face £50 fine from today – but the penalty could be far worse, as little ones face increased risk of serious illness. That’s the message from Public Health England and Fresh Smoke Free North East today, as Stoptober begins on the same day a new law banning smoking in vehicles transporting under 18s comes into force.
