Two events are taking place across Teesside in support of the Big Latch On – a global campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding. The infant feeding co-ordinator and the breastfeeding peer supporters at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are inviting breastfeeding mums to join them at the Stray Café, Redcar, on Friday 1 August and at Stewart Park, Middlesbrough, on Saturday 2 August to take part in the global Big Latch On.

Staff and patients urged to battle cravings

Smokers are being urged to prepare for battle and attempt to give up cigarettes for good to mark national No Smoking Day. This year’s No Smoking Day campaign takes place on Wednesday 12 March and has a ‘V for Victory’ theme which aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of smokers across the country to win the fight against cigarettes.

Major initiative to tackle smoking in pregnancy underway

A major initiative to protect thousands of unborn babies from the harm caused by smoking and tackle the worst rates of smoking during pregnancy in the country is being rolled out in South Tees and across the North East. Babyclear, led by Fresh and the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre, is a UK first aimed at reducing premature births, stillbirths, miscarriages and complications after labour due to smoking.

Stoptober campaign launched

Smokers are being invited to join the tens of thousands of people gearing up to quit for Stoptober. This year, Stoptober is aiming to become the nation’s biggest ever quitting drive – with every North East local authority and dozens of organisations with a reach of over half a million staff in the region taking part to back it. Stoptober is a 28 day initiative from Public Health England, which is backed by Fresh and encourages the North East’s 460,000 smokers to make a quit attempt, starting on October 1.

‘Latch on’ to a synchronised breastfeeding event

Mums from across Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland are being invited to take part in worldwide breastfeeding awareness event on Saturday.
As part of the World Breastfeeding Week, which runs from Thursday 1 August, thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event to be held in multiple locations.
