A new campaign has been launched by South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to encourage all staff who prescribe or administer antibiotics to follow a few simple steps to prevent unnecessary use.
Overusing antibiotics can increase antibiotic resistance so staff are being encouraged to act now to make sure life-saving medicines remain effective for future generations.
Patients taking antibiotics are also more likely to develop infections such as Cloristium difficile (antibiotics kill off some of the good bacteria in the gut which allows the C diff bacteria to multiply) – another reason to use antibiotics sparingly.
Doctors and other prescribers are being urged to always check the following when prescribing antibiotics:
- End date
- Daily review
