Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland Service

What happens during an appointment?

The dietitian will ask about your usual diet, eating pattern and lifestyle they will also ask about your health and any medicines you are currently taking. (It is useful to bring a list of current medications with you if possible).

The dietitian will then agree an individual plan with you by giving suggestions and advice on how to improve your diet. The plan is individually tailored and is aimed at helping you to make specific, realistic and achievable changes to your diet. At the end of the session, we will discuss with you the arrangements for your next appointment if this is required.

You may be referred to a dietitian whilst you are an in-patient in one of the primary care hospitals in this case you will be seen in the ward and maybe followed up in the community.

How to refer?

To get an appointment with a dietitian your GP, consultant, practice nurse, health visitor and/or other healthcare professional will send a referral to us containing information on your health and what type of nutritional advice they want us to discuss with you. Unfortunately, we cannot see you if we do not have a medical referral.

We are pleased to be able to offer dietetic student training. Some of our students may be close to qualifying, and may be undertaking a dietetic role including taking a clinic. The dietitian responsible for that clinic closely supervises each student.
