I have been a consultant in the department since 2001. I helped setup the diabetes insulin pump and DAFNE services in the Hospital. I currently run a diabetes and endocrine clinic once a week and have two in-patient ward rounds each week.

I have a major interest in medical education. I teach medical students in the hospital, often in the Diabetes Centre. As Director of Medical Studies at Newcastle University I am responsible for around 2,000 medical students who are taught across the region, including here on Teesside.

I am an academic consultant physician specialised in Diabetes and Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine. My PhD research was on Human Islet Transplantation and Adult Stem Cell Therapy for Diabetes, which I did with Professor James Shaw at Newcastle University. I completed my specialty training in North East of England rotating between several Diabetes and Endocrinology units.

I joined the Diabetes and Endocrinology team at James Cook University Hospital in March 2017 where I am leading on Research, Insulin Pump Therapy and Advanced Therapeutics, and Antenatal Diabetes Care. I am also affiliated with the Institute of Cellular Medicine at Newcastle University, where I am co-supervising a PhD candidate with Professor Shaw on project exploring novel culture and treatment approaches for pancreatic islets in order to enhance quality and ultimately transplantation outcomes.

I work alongside other members of the team to help patients cope with the emotional and psychological impact of diabetes. I hold 3 clinics each week where I help patients to gradually improve how they think and feel about their diabetes and work towards making changes to their diabetes management. This may include supporting individuals with their eating habits, activity levels, adherence to medications and diabetes self-care.
