Along with my management responsibilities and duties, I am also the lead and nurse educator for our Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) education programme, these courses provide structured education for people with type 1 diabetes.

I hold a nurse led Diabetes Rapid Access clinic to commence patients on insulin or other injectable therapy and for patients requiring education and advice following inpatient stays or urgent referral from primary care or consultant clinic. Together with the dietitian I see patients in our Diabetes Joint Education clinic which offers complex education on carbohydrate counting along with DAFNE refresher appointments.

I have a telephone advice clinic which patients can ring for guidance on any aspect of their diabetes, including management of blood glucose levels and insulin dose adjustment.

I visit inpatients on wards and in other departments to advise on clinical management plans, provide education and act as a resource to ward staff.

My endocrine nurse role includes being the lead for our dynamic endocrine testing service, where we carry out tests which may take several hours in an outpatient setting; previously these tests would require a hospital admission. I am also a facilitator for our Homecare Endocrine service, which allows patients to receive their growth hormone or lanreotide prescription delivery to their home to allow the patient or their partner to administer their own injections.

I am the department lead for infection prevention and control.

My role in the diabetes service is to look after young people (aged 16 to 25) who have diabetes, facilitating their transition from paediatrics to the adult service. I participate in the consultant led young persons’ diabetes clinics which are held on Monday afternoon and Thursday evenings. I also hold my own clinics here in the Diabetes Care Centre and in some local schools and colleges. I visit young patients on wards and in other departments to advise on clinical management plans, provide education and act as a resource to ward staff. I offer home visits where appropriate. A lot of my work is done with the young people out in the community, working with multidisciplinary agencies.

I am a member of the adult insulin pump service and have a special interest in continuous glucose monitoring. I participate in the consultant led, multi-professional insulin pump clinic on a Tuesday morning along with consultant diabetologists, diabetes nurses and the dietitian. In a rotation with other nurses I hold a nurse led insulin pump clinic on Thursday afternoon.

I am the lead nurse for our antenatal diabetes service; I participate in consultant led antenatal clinics on Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon. I provide pre-pregnancy advice and ante/post-natal care in a twice monthly nurse led clinic. I also visit ante/post-natal patients on wards to advise on clinical management plans, provide education and act as a resource to ward staff.

I am part of the Specialist Weight Management Team; we hold various community clinics across Middlesbrough and East Cleveland. As part of this I help people gain better control of their diabetes while losing weight or in preparation for bariatric surgery. I participate in the multi-professional initial assessment clinics along with a consultant and dietitian; I then follow up patients ‘one to one’ in my nurse led clinic.

My endocrine nurse role includes performing endocrine tests as part of our dynamic endocrine testing service. I am also a facilitator for our Homecare Endocrine service, which allows patients to receive their growth hormone or lanreotide prescription delivery to their home to allow the patient or their partner to administer their own injections.

I assist the endocrine nurses when they perform dynamic endocrine testing.
I educate outpatients and inpatients on the wards regarding blood glucose monitoring.
