Most scoliosis has no known cause and occurs in adolescence (adolescent idiopathic scoliosis). Only a small number of people affected will need surgery.
The decision to have surgery is made in the clinic and is discussed between the child, parents and surgeon. When surgery is considered to be the best option, the team will answer any questions you have and provide you with a comprehensive question and answer booklet.
Throughout this process, the team are available to answer specific questions and to give support and reassurance.
For more complex scoliosis and/or for children with other health problems, preparation for surgery takes longer, as it involves more assessments and more team members.
