Major Haemorrhage and Trauma Packs
Trauma packs provide rapid access to an agreed number of blood components in situations of major haemorrhage when it is impractical to collect units individually.
Protocols are defined for both adult and paediatric patients.
In extreme life-threatening haemorrhage, when blood is required immediately and there is insufficient time to perform a blood group on a patient, a supply of emergency O Negative blood (flying squad) is always available:
- in the emergency department (A&E) fridge and in blood transfusion laboratory at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough; and
- in the Haemobank near pathology at the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.
