Massive Haemorrhage and Trauma Packs

Trauma packs provide rapid access to an agreed number of blood components in situations of massive haemorrhage when it is impractical to collect units individually. Protocols are defined for both adult and paediatric patients.

In extreme life-threatening haemorrhage, when blood is required immediately and there is insufficient time to perform a blood group on a patient, a supply of emergency O Negative blood (flying squad) is always available; 2 units in the Issue fridge (outside pathology) and 4 units in the emergency department (A&E) fridge at The James Cook University Hospital.
