Some women are unable to have children because they have either no eggs or only poor quality ones.
These women can still become pregnant when an egg donor gives them eggs. At present there is a shortage of egg donors in the UK, so that many women who could benefit from donated eggs cannot be treated.
There is no payment offered for egg donation in this country, although reasonable expenses such as travel and childcare can be refunded.
However, women who are having IVF as a treatment are allowed to share their eggs in return for treatment at reduced cost. This is what is meant by egg sharing.
