Stoma care advisory service

The stoma care advisory service aims to provide an accessible, effective, evidenced-based specialist stoma care service to meet the needs of all South Tees patients with a stoma/stoma-related surgery.

The stoma care nurses lead on all nursing matters relating to stoma care; acting as an expert resource ensuring all clients, relatives, carers and staff have ready access to expert nursing support and advice.

What is a stoma care nurse?

The stoma care nurse is a fully qualified nurse who has undergone additional training to provide specialist advice and support for patients – and their families – on all aspects of care before and after their stoma surgery.

When will I meet the stoma care nurse?

A referral can be made either by your GP, consultant or nursing staff for you to be visited at hospital, home or at one of our nurse led clinic.

Will I still be visited by the district nurse?

This will be arranged by your discharging ward and yes you will be visited by the district nurse one to two days after your discharge home to assess any nursing care or support you may need. The stoma care nurse and district nurse are part of the community nursing service and work together in your care.

How can I contact the stoma care nurse?

If you need to contact our service call 01287 284113 or leave a message on the answerphone if there is no reply. The stoma care nurses will contact you as soon as possible. In an emergency telephone your district nurse or your GP practice.

Will I see the stoma nurse at home?

The stoma care nurse will arrange to visit you at home within seven working days following your discharge from hospital. Follow-up visits will be made with you as required. After this you will be reviewed at one of our nurse-led clinics, by appointment, and these are at:

  • Cleveland Health Centre – Middlesbrough (Wednesday mornings – 9am to midday)
  • Redcar Primary Care Hospital Redcar (Friday mornings – 9am to midday)
