Stoma Care Advisory Service

Community Based Stoma Care Advisory Services

Our aim is to provide a high quality service addressing all lifestyle issues affecting patients with stomas and related conditions.

We offer counselling (before and after surgery), information for patients, relatives and their carers, pre-operative ‘stoma siting’ of patients in a community setting and also carry out community assessments after treatment, within seven working days of leaving hospital.

General advice on skin care and new stoma products, such as planning holidays and support on sexual matters, is included in the patient information.

We can also refer patients to other specialist nursing services, such as the inflammatory bowel disease nurse specialist and the colorectal nursing service. As a specialist community stoma care service, we work with all patients and family members, plus any professionals or organisations involved with caring for patients who have a stoma.

The teams

There are 2 community-based specialist stoma care nursing services with one covering the Middlesbrough, Redcar and East Cleveland Area and the other covering Hambleton and Richmondshire. Each team consists of two fully qualified nurses who have been specially trained to provide help and support to patients and their families on all aspects of stoma care.

What happens during the appointment?

All stoma care patients are given an appointment and are invited to attend review appointments in a nurse-led stoma clinic. This happens quarterly within the first year of surgery.

For the Middlesbrough, Redcar and East Cleveland Area stoma patients, Nurse-led stoma clinics are held at:

Cleveland Health Centre (Middlesbrough) every Wednesday from 9am to midday
