Stoma Care Advisory Service

Community Based Stoma Care Advisory Services

Our aim is to provide a high quality service addressing all lifestyle issues affecting patients with stomas and related conditions.

We offer counselling (before and after surgery) and provide information for patients, relatives and their carers in a community setting. The teams also carry assessment at home; post-surgery within seven working days of receiving a referral.

General advice on diet, skin care, new stoma products, travel and support on sexual matters are included in the patient information.

We can also refer patients to other specialist nursing services, such as the inflammatory bowel disease nurse specialist, dieticians and the colorectal nursing service. As a specialist community stoma care service, we work with all patients and family members, plus any professionals or organisations involved with caring for patients who have a stoma.

The teams

There are two community-based specialist stoma care nursing services with one covering the Middlesbrough, Redcar and East Cleveland areas and the other covering Hambleton and Richmondshire.

Each team consists of fully qualified nurses who have been specially trained to provide help and support to patients and their families on all aspects of stoma care.

Middlesbrough, Redcar and East Cleveland

Specialist nurses: Julie Morrisroe, Carole Younger and Alison Hall-O’Donnell

Hambleton and Richmondshire

Specialist nurse: Judith Smith
