Macmillan cancer volunteer role description

Daily supervision:  Macmillan Cancer Support Worker

Accountability:  Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centres Business Manager

Location:  The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough or Friarage Hospital, Northallerton (depending on preference)

Tasks

We will assign volunteers to tasks based on their skills, ability and preferences.

  • Meeting and greeting centre users in a professional manner
  • Listening ear for distressed patients
  • Answering the telephone and filling out enquiry forms
  • Work in clinical areas to support patients while having treatment
  • Providing leaflets and printouts where necessary, to service users
  • Signposting centre users to other services, agencies and sources of good information and support, specific to their identified needs
  • Updating the information centre stock, when necessary, in conjunction with the Macmillan Cancer Support Worker
  • Undertaking outreach tasks where appropriate such as fundraising and awareness events i.e. Coffee Mornings, Macmillan Café
  • Data input
  • Taking donations and providing receipts
  • Supporting benefit  adviser and appointment system, completing benefit application forms (with supervision)

Essential training:

This will include the following:

  • Trust Corporate Mandatory Training
  • Macmillan Induction Programme – including being a Macmillan volunteer and what it means, an overview of cancer and the cancer journey, listening and communication skills, coping mechanisms, code of conduct, confidentiality
  • Other training will be offered to all volunteers as it becomes available in the trust or from Macmillan Cancer Support.

Commitment

Hours will be negotiated on an individual basis. A rota is available in the centre. Volunteer sessions are for a minimum of three hours.

Support and supervision

Your first line of support for enquiries will be the cancer support worker or centre manager.

Communications / relationships

Noticeboard with relevant up to date, six weekly volunteer meetings, emailed regularly with information form the centre on news, new information, and training from other sources

Users of the service

Your client group may be cancer patients, their family members, friends, neighbours, in fact any member of the public who wants to access the centre.

We also provide an information resource to professionals in the cancer services team, and others who may be hospital or community based.
