  2. Plan ahead to help you cope with stressful situations
  3. Pick a quit date that will be stress-free, and stick to it!
  4. Take it one day at a time, and congratulate yourself every day
  5. Pair up with someone else who wants to stop so you can support each other
  6. Use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), bupropion (Zyban), or varenicline (Champix) to help you manage the cravings – these are available on prescription
  7. There’s no such thing as having ‘just one’ cigarette
  8. At first avoid situations where you might be tempted to smoke
  9. Keep track of the money you’re saving and treat yourself!
  10. Think positive – you CAN do it!

Products to help

When you decide to stop smoking it can be a good idea to use products to help kick the habit.

  • Patches – Nicotine patches come in the form of a sticky plaster which, when placed on the skin, releases nicotine slowly into the bloodstream feeding the nicotine addiction.
  • Inhalator – The nicotine inhalator is a plastic mouthpiece containing nicotine. When you inhale, vapour is released and the nicotine is absorbed from the inner lining of the cheeks. This can be a good replacement for those who miss the physical action of smoking the most.
  • Gum – Nicotine gum is a commonly used nicotine product. When using the gum, chew a piece for a short time until you taste a peppery taste, then park it at the side of your gum for the nicotine to be absorbed through the lining of your mouth. When the taste fades start chewing again.
  • Microtabs – Microtabs are small tablets that contain nicotine and are placed under the tongue for it to be absorbed through your bloodstream. The effects are lost if the tablet is swallowed.
  • Lozenge – Lozenges are sucked slowly to release the nicotine and can take up to 20-30 minutes to dissolve. The lozenge must not be swallowed and should be safely thrown away after 30 minutes if not dissolved fully.
  • Nasal spray – The nicotine nasal spray releases a swift and effective vapour which is then absorbed through the lining of the nose. Ideally for those who are very heavy smokers.
  • Champix – Champix is a tablet which is available on prescription for those who are motivated to stop smoking. It is designed to helps you stop smoking by easing the cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping smoking.
  • Zyban – This is a medication which changes the way that your body reacts to nicotine. You start taking the product a couple of weeks before you stop smoking and continue to take for up to eight weeks to help you through the cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
