Shiv is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (ST2) in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, currently based at the South Tees Academic Centre for Surgery at The James Cook University Hospital, affiliated with the University of York and Hull York Medical School.
Originally from Derbyshire, Shiv studied medicine at Newcastle University, graduating in 2022 with an MBBS and achieving Distinction in an intercalated Master of Research (MRes).
His master’s research focused on the prognostic role of inflammatory biomarkers in hip fracture outcomes, sparking a strong interest in data-driven orthopaedic research, clinical trials, and patient-related outcomes in hip and knee surgery.
He was successfully appointed to his first-choice Academic Foundation Programme in 2022, where he worked closely with the Northumbria Young Adult Hip research group.
During this time, he played a key role in establishing Northumbria as the first UK site for the REPAIR trial – an international RCT investigating AMIC for acetabular cartilage defects.
In his FY2 year, he was successfully awarded an NIHR-funded run-through ACF training post in trauma and orthopaedics and has since passed the Intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS).
Alongside clinical training, Shiv contributes to various research projects, including clinical trials, registry-based studies, and observational cohort studies.
He has presented his work at several national and international orthopaedic meetings including BOTA, BOA, BHS, EHS, and ISHA, and was recently shortlisted for the ISHA Trainee Award for his work evaluating national trends, complications and re-operations following hip arthroscopy in England.
He is currently involved in several projects with the ACeS team, including CAREFUL, TRIDENT II, and PRO-THIRD studies.
Shiv is also passionate about widening access to orthopaedic careers and improving orthopaedic education for junior doctors and medical students.
He serves on the steering committee of the recently launched TENDON study, which aims to evaluate undergraduate orthopaedic teaching across UK medical schools.
He is the co-founder and Past-President of the British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association (BOMSA) and has held national roles on BOA EdCar, BHS CandD, and BOTA national committees.
He has been a recipient of a NOA Excellence in Orthopaedics Prize and two MedAll Exceptional Educator Awards, reflecting shared efforts to improve diversity, inclusion, and undergraduate education in orthopaedic surgery.
Outside of work, Shiv enjoys playing golf, cricket, supporting Newcastle United Football Club and discovering new places to eat and drink.
