Audiology

This leaflet is intended to provide you with information on additional hearing support services. This leaflet is available in large print or other languages, please let a member of the Audiology team know if you require this.

Local hearing support groups

Middlesbrough deaf centre

  • When: Tuesday’s Sign and Social and Deaf Blind Befriending Group (10am to 2pm)(Facebook: Middlesbrough sign and social). Thursdays 55+ group (10.30am to 2:30pm, members only)

Deaf meet up

  • When: Thursday (weekly); 1pm until 4pm

Darlington deaf club

  • When: Saturday evening (Every two weeks); 7pm to 11pm

Darlington deaf older person’s group

A social group for people who are deaf and over the age of 50. Activities include raffles, bingo and also outdoor events.

Harrogate deaf cafe

  • When: Every second Thursday of every month between 2pm and 4pm.
  • Where: Harrogate Library, Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, HG1 1EG

Resource centre for people who are deaf and hard of hearing

  • When: Every Wednesday between 2pm and 4pm.
  • Where: Harrogate and Ripon Centre for Voluntary Services, 46-50 East Parade, Harrogate, HG1 5RR.

Middlesbrough council sensory drop-in clinic

Sensory drop-in clinic for adults who are partially sighted, blind, deaf or hard of hearing. Family and carers are also welcome. Free refreshments, monthly activities such as mindfulness, physical activity sessions as well as assessments and signposting to support services.

  • When: First Friday of each month (drop in between 10am and 12noon)
  • Where: The Live Well Centre, Dundas Arcade, Middlesbrough own centre

National hearing support

Royal national institute for deaf people

National support body which provides a wide range of information and support for people with hearing loss or tinnitus.

British deaf association

A national deaf-led organisation which campaigns for equal right on a national level national level and works at a local level to empower deaf people to achieve access to local public services.

Hearing link

Provide a wide range of support ranging from emotional support and practical help to support group pick ups.

Local authority sensory support services

Local authority sensory services provide information and support for individuals who have a hearing loss, are D/deaf or are deafblind or have a dual sensory loss. This can include information on daily living advice, health and wellbeing, community social groups and individual assessment for provision of equipment in some circumstances.

Other support

Access to work

Can provide grants to help pay for practical support with work. For example through things such as special equipment, adaptations, or support workers. The support you get will depend on your needs. You can check your eligibility and apply at: https://www.gov.uk/access-to-work

Personal independence payment (PIP)

Personal independence payment (PIP) is a benefit for people between the ages of 16 and pension age who need help taking part in everyday life or who find it difficult to get around. You can apply for PIP on the government website: https://www.gov.uk/pip

Lip reading classes

Association of Teachers of Lip reading to Adult (ALTA) for information on courses available in the area.
