Background
The Trueview software, developed by the UK based company IBEX, measures a patient’s bone health from a standard x-ray with the aim to provide an accurate early warning of osteoporosis, and therefore a patient’s risk of potentially fatal fragility fractures.
The NHS currently spends over £1billion a year on the diagnosis and treatment of hip fractures, which are typically osteoporotic fragility fractures – the largest single cause of accident-related death in the UK, with a third of patients dying within a year of first presenting at hospital.
The new technology means signs of a problem can be picked up from the first fracture X-ray without the need to wait several weeks for further specialist scans. This enables targeted treatment to start much sooner, reducing the risk of more serious fractures occurring.
What we are doing
The orthopaedic research team is leading the study in collaboration with colleagues in radiology and rheumatology.
Patients in Phase 1 will be recruited from DEXA bone scan outpatient clinics.
Patients in Phase 2 will be recruited from orthopaedic outpatient’s clinics and would normally be receiving an X-ray assessment of their wrist, shoulder or pelvis.
