The rheumatology day unit at The James Cook University Hospital is appealing for the local community to help them transform their outside area into a vibrant garden for their patients.
Patients currently attending the department’s day unit often spend whole days inside with no outdoor space for them to stretch their legs during the long days.
Dawn Youll, rheumatology clinical sister and department manager, said: “Previously the day unit’s garden was dark and dingy and wasn’t used by anyone.
“We recently had the garden paved to ensure that patients with mobility needs can access it easily and we had a pergola fitted to provide some shade and shelter.
Although it’s clean and tidy compared to what we had before, it really needs brightening up and transforming it into a designated outdoor area for our patients and staff.
“We’re always blown away by the generosity of our patients and the local community and with their help we’re hoping to raise £8,000 to put towards some flowers, trees, seating and lighting.
