An inspirational NHS dentist from Teesside has been presented with a special recognition award from NHS England.
Ushmita Johar from University Hospitals Tees was named regional SAS dentist of the year at the NHS England North East SAS Awards on Tuesday 22 September.
She was recognised for her outstanding commitment and dedication to delivering high-quality patient care and mentoring the next generation of dental trainees.
Specialist, associate specialist and specialty (SAS) doctors and dentists are a highly skilled and experienced part of the NHS workforce, providing expert patient care across a wide range of healthcare services.
She said: “I love my job. No two days are ever the same. My schedule involves a dynamic mix of hands-on surgical operating procedures, outpatient clinics, and administrative duties—including managing and organising rotas.”
Alongside providing expert patient care, Ushmita also plays an active key role in training and mentoring junior trainees and registrars, delivering hands-on skills training, supervision and support and promoting staff wellbeing.
She said: “I am absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to be named regional SAS dentist of the year.
“To have my hard work, dedication, and passion for patient care and work recognised at this level is incredibly rewarding.
I am immensely grateful to my wonderful team and colleagues for their continuous support. I would particularly like to thank our clinical director, Mr Bridle, for his unwavering support, as well as my senior colleagues whose encouragement, guidance and mentorship have been invaluable throughout my career.
“I am fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic team that makes delivering excellent patient care possible every day.
“I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our SAS tutor, Mr Kamran Saeed, for his constant support.
“This achievement belongs to all of us.”
SAS dentists provide specialist patient care within the NHS, playing a vital role in delivering high-quality treatment, supporting clinical teams, teaching future professionals and helping develop services for patients.
