What is OpenAthens?
Anyone who works for the NHS and students on placement are entitled to an OpenAthens username and password.
It provides access to electronic journals, electronic books and healthcare databases. OpenAthens is the authentication system that allows you to access these resources.
OpenAthens registration
There are two stages to OpenAthens registration; creating your account and activating your account.
Creating your account
Please register on the NHS network (N3) if you can. If you’re not on the NHS network, but have an NHS email address, please provide this. Your account will then be created automatically.
If you are not registering from within the NHS network (N3), you must provide a work, professional of academic email address. Please use an NHS email address if you have one.
Begin your application
When on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub, find the ‘where do I start?’ section underneath ‘start your search’ and click onto the ‘NHS OpenAthens account’ link.
You will be asked to complete your registration information starting with your email address.
Next you will need to specify your organisation.
You can search for our organisation by typing in ‘South Tees’ then choosing ‘South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’ from the drop down list. Enter your professional details.
Warning
If you provide a personal email address and are not on the NHS network (N3) your application will be automatically refused.
Once completed click to accept the terms and conditions and then click submit.
You will receive an email containing a link to activate your account and you will then be prompted to set up your password. You cannot use your OpenAthens account until you have done this.
Changing your details
Login to OpenAthens and the ‘My Account’ page should appear.
From this page you will be able to change your organisation, email and password.
If you forget your username or password email [email protected].
When you submit a request to change organisation you will be prompted to confirm your password and asked to provide contact details of your new location.
Your existing account will be deactivated and an automated email will be sent to you containing an activation link.
