General wound care instructions
It is important that you observe the area around your wound so you are aware of any changes. Your dressing should be waterproof unless told otherwise and should remain in place for at least 48 hours.
Please remove your dressing on:
Things to look out for
Signs which might indicate an infection or allergic reaction:
- Increased pain and discomfort in or around the wound
- Redness or swelling
- Any significant oozing from the wound i.e. blood, pus or other fluids
- Any unpleasant odour coming from the wound
- Itchy, irritated skin or a rash forming from around the wound
Recommendations
Please be aware, patients who have had a loop recorder implanted or removed or a device box change only need to rest the arm closest to the device or wound for a few days to allow the wound to heal.
After having your device implanted and before returning for your 1st check-up (usually in 4-6 weeks time) it is important to remember a few things:
- Try to avoid raising the arm closest to your wound or device above shoulder height
- You should avoid pulling or pushing heavy loads
- Try to avoid leaning on or supporting yourself with the arm closest to your wound or device
- Normal daily activities can still be performed with the above information in mind i.e. washing and eating etc.
- As per national DVLA guidance, there may be some driving restrictions in place following a device implant. While on the ward you should be informed of any restrictions. If you are unsure, please do not drive and contact the hospital for advice, contact numbers can be found on the back of this leaflet. Failure to comply with driving restrictions may invalidate your insurance.
