Radiology X-Ray
The procedure you have had today is called a core biopsy. Using local anaesthetic, a sample of tissue has been removed, for examination. The following information is to advise you about your care after this procedure.
The dressing
A small dressing or plaster will be applied which may be removed the next day or at your convenience.
Pain
The local anaesthetic will gradually wear off over the next few hours. The area may then feel sore and uncomfortable. If you wish, you may take pain relieving medication such as paracetamol (but not an aspirin based drug as this may increase any bruising), following the instructions on the package.
A cold compress applied to the area may also help to relieve any pain.
Bleeding
Bleeding from the wound site is rare but if there is any, press on the wound site for about 10 to 20 minutes and it should stop. If bleeding does not stop, seek advice.
Bruising
It is likely you will develop a small bruise, which may feel lumpy around the area of the biopsy. This is normal and part of the healing process. In some cases, the bruising may be extensive and could take several weeks to fade. This is nothing to worry about.
Complications can occur but are uncommon.
Seek medical advice and report any of the following:
• Redness, swelling, warmth, bleeding, or any other drainage from the biopsy site
• A fever – a temperature above 38° and, or chills
