Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU)
A large range of surgical procedures are now carried out as day surgery. Recovery from your surgery is different for everyone and will depend on the type of surgery.
It is common to experience some pain and swelling around your surgery site which should improve in a few days. Paracetamol can be taken to ease any discomfort for the first few days. Depending on the type of procedure you may be prescribed stronger pain relief medication, these will be given to you to take home. You will be given specific advice about your surgery before going home as well as details of any follow up appointments.
What signs and symptoms should I look out for?
- Increasing redness and swelling around the surgery site
- Increased or severe pain
- Feeling feverish
- Blood or puss leaking from the wound
- Persistent nausea and vomiting
- Coughing up blood
- Difficulty passing urine
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling and pain in your calves
If you experience any of these symptoms or something doesn’t feel right, please contact a member of the Day Surgery Team during opening hours or NHS 111 out of hours.
How can I help my recovery?
- Gentle exercise or moving around the house as much as you can
- Take regular pain relief as needed, so that you can get back to your usual daily routine as soon as possible
- Drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy diet
- Avoid alcohol and smoking
If you are taking strong pain relief, a mild laxative may help prevent constipation
