Radiology – MRI
An x-ray
Sometimes if you have hurt yourself or you are poorly you may need an MRI scan. The scan takes pictures of the inside of your body.
Bringing someone
You may have someone with you.
When you arrive
When you arrive, a receptionist will check
- your name
- your address
- your date of birth
Waiting area
You may be asked to sit in a waiting area.
Radiographers
The staff that will take the scan are called Radiographers
Questions
The Radiographer will ask you some questions that make it safe for you to have your scan.
Changing clothes
You will be asked to change into hospital clothes and remove any jewellery including watches.
Having your scan
When you have your scan it does not hurt and nothing will touch you. You will need to lie still on a bed. The bed will move through the scanner.
Wearing ear protection
You will be asked to wear ear plugs or headphones as the scanner makes a noise.
During the scan
Radiographers can see and talk to while the scan is happening and tell you how long the scan will take. If you get frightened, you can press a stop button.
Getting dressed
When the scan is finished you can get changed into your own clothes and put your jewellery back on.
Your doctor
The results of your scan will be looked at by your doctor.
