Lying on your side with the arm straight by your side

Lying on your side, start with your arm straight by your side (Fig A).

Arm moves so straight out in front of you paralle to the floor
Fig B.

Slowly and smoothly move the straight arm forwards keeping it parallel to the floor (Fig B).

Arm moves upwards towards cheek and parallel to the floor
Fig C.

Move the arm toward your cheek (Fig C) and slowly return to start position. Keep the arm parallel to the floor at all times.

Progress exercise -a small water bottle is placed in the hand
Fig D.

To progress this exercise, place a small water bottle in your hand (Fig D).

The amount you put into the bottle will increase as you progress and your physiotherapist will guide you on how much water to use.
