Remember your SPACER

Metered dose inhalers (MDIs) deliver inhaled medication in a fine spray (aerosol) form.

Using a spacer makes it easier to get the right amount of medication straight to your lungs, where it’s needed.

Care for your spacer

• Hand wash the spacer using washing up liquid.
• Do not to scrub inside the spacer as this may damage it.
• Leave the spacer to air- dry which reduces static and ensures the inhaled medication does not stick to the inside.
• It is ready to be used again when it is completely dry and put back together.

Spacer without mask

1. Shake the inhaler
2. Slot the inhaler into the end of the spacer
3. Put mouth around the mouth piece
4. Press the inhaler once
5. Breath slowly and deeply five times

Spacer with mask

1. Shake the inhaler
2. Slot the inhaler into the end of the spacer
3. The other end of the spacer has a mask which goes over the nose and mouth. The spacer is tipped up (large spacer)
4. Press the inhaler once
5. Count twenty seconds over the nose and mouth
6. Repeat for each dose from step 1
