Occupational Therapy
Material: Thermoplastic.
Purpose: To support and stabilise the thumb joints and to provide pain relief during activities. The splint supports the thumb and allows easier grip.
Wearing instructions
To be worn only during the day as and when required to carry out activities of daily living. Do not wear continuously. Remove regularly when resting and for lighter activities.
Care of your splint
Wipe clean with lukewarm water or clean with anti-bacterial wipes. Remove and wash straps in warm soapy water. Do not immerse in hot water or leave splint in a warm place as it may lose its shape.
Precautions
Please check for:
- Redness, soreness or breakdown of skin
- Increase in pain or discomfort or worsening of symptoms whilst wearing the splint.
- No improvement in condition after wearing the splint as instructed for 2 to 3 weeks.
- Allergic reaction such as raised, itchy, red rash.
- Repair or alteration is necessary such as snapping of splint, loss of shape or no longer fitting comfortably.
In the event of any of the above. Discontinue wearing your splint(s) and contact your therapist on the details below.
How do I keep muscles strong?
If you have been given exercises for your thumb, run through these each time you take your splints off. This helps to reduce the risk of stiffness and weakness.
