Children and Young Person’s Audiology
The test – what does it involve?
It is important that we test your baby’s hearing as soon as possible.
The appointment may take between 30 and 90 minutes. Please try to bring your baby to the appointment awake, but tired, so that he or she will sleep during testing. There will be time within the appointment to feed and change your baby to help keep them comfortable and aid with their sleeping so please also bring bottles and changes as required.
It is important that the room is quiet throughout testing, so it is advisable not to bring other children to the appointment. Mobile phones, smart watches and any other portable, electronic devices will also need to be switched off so as not to interfere with equipment.
We will ask you some questions relating to your baby’s hearing and health.
We may test your baby’s hearing either by:
- Putting a soft-tipped ear piece into their ear and playing some clicking sounds for around 2 to 3 minutes in each ear.
- Gently cleaning your baby’s skin on their forehead and behind their ears before applying sticky pads to these areas and playing clicking sounds through a headphone placed over their ear, or a box placed behind their ear.
We may also carry out a test to see if there is any congestion behind your baby’s eardrums. This test involves putting a soft-tipped ear piece into their ear and applying a small amount of air pressure.
After the test
We will discuss any results with you at the end of the appointment and we will advise whether any further testing is required. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions.
