The department runs the laboratory service for blood transfusion in the pathology labs at The James Cook University Hospital, supplying the Friarage Hospital as required.
We offer a full and comprehensive range of testing of patient samples and supply a wide range of blood components and products.
The laboratories work to legally required standards as set out in the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations and assessed by Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
UKAS accreditation
South Tees Pathology Service (excluding the Andrology and Point of Care Testing Services) is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (No. 9210) to the ISO15189:2012 standards for medical laboratories.
Our accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation.

The James Cook University Hospital
The blood transfusion laboratory is based within the pathology department at The James Cook University Hospital. It is a purpose built laboratory opened in 2002.
We are able to offer a wide range of basic and complex investigations including:
- Blood grouping and red cell phenotyping
- Red cell antibody screening, antibody identification and antibody titration
- Foetal maternal haemorrhage screening and quantification
- Supply of red blood cell components (via serological crossmatch or electronic issue)
- Supply of platelet components
- Supply of plasma components
- Supply of batched blood products
The core laboratory working hours are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. An emergency service runs outside of these hours.
The laboratory maintains emergency supply of blood, including major haemorrhage packs, for patients requiring emergency transfusion

Friarage Hospital
The haematology laboratory at the Friarage Hospital is based within the blood sciences department.
It is a new purpose built laboratory opened in 2007. All blood transfusion tests are referred to the laboratory at James Cook.
The laboratory maintains supplies of blood components and products that can be released as required and where components or products released by James Cook can be stored awaiting use.
The laboratory maintains emergency supply of blood, for patients requiring emergency transfusion.
The core laboratory working hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. An emergency service runs without these hours.
