Pathology

The pathology department at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides laboratory services at both James Cook and the Friarage sites for a wide variety of service users, which include local and regional hospitals, local GP surgeries and local employers.

It is comprised of four directorates, all of which provide different aspects of pathological analysis and patient services that enable both the diagnosis and monitoring of patient conditions.

Pathology is the science behind the diagnosis of diseases and it is a very rewarding job because the results can be life-saving.

Currently we provide over 1000 different analyses and conduct more than 18 million tests a year  on blood, tissue and other bodily fluids to detect everything from allergies to cancers.

Statistics show 70% of all diagnoses made in the NHS involve pathology. Results can also be used to determine the best course of treatment for a patient.

We aim to provide a high quality, cost effective service that is focused on the needs of the patient, and is responsive to the rapidly changing environment in which we operate.
