We became a Foundation Trust in May 2009. As a Foundation Trust, we have greater freedom to develop services for patients, such as the new radiotherapy and oncology development at The James Cook University Hospital.
Our services continue to be free and based on need but being a Foundation Trust gives local communities – you – much more say in the services we develop so you can really influence how we operate.
Decisions are taken locally and we can now be more responsive to your needs but our fundamental core values remain the same:

Achieving Foundation Trust status is a crucial milestone and provides an excellent opportunity for you to get involved and help shape the hospital services we provide by becoming a member.
What is a Foundation Trust?
NHS Foundation Trusts are still very much part of the NHS and provide free, quality healthcare based on need and not ability to pay.
This form of public ownership and accountability will ensure our hospital services more accurately reflect the needs and expectations of local people and also give us the freedom to innovate.
Another advantage in being a Foundation Trust is we have greater financial freedom to borrow and invest in services without needing to seek external approval.
We will still be closely inspected and regulated to make sure we continue to meet performance targets and other NHS standards of care and this is done by an independent regulator of NHS Foundation Trusts known as Monitor.
Monitor receives and considers the applications from NHS trusts seeking foundation status and if satisfied that certain criteria are met, will authorise them to operate as NHS Foundation Trusts. The terms of their formal authorisation set out the conditions under which a Foundation Trust is required to operate and we were formally authorised on 1 May 2009.
