What is the portfolio pathway or CESR?
The portfolio pathway replaces the CESR route or certificate of eligibility for specialist registration.
Applicants who have not completed a GMC-approved programme of training use the portfolio pathway to demonstrate that they have the knowledge, skills and experience required for practising as an eligible specialist or GP in the UK.
As the name suggests, the application will be based on the portfolio and there is a great deal of information for each specialty on the GMC website.

What are alternatives to the portfolio pathway or CESR route?
- You can choose to apply for a training post and aim for CCT (certificate of completion of training)
- You can choose to stay on in an SAS (specialty doctor and specialist) post. See new SAS contract here on NHS Employers website
- If you are in a locally employed doctor (LED) post and want to progress as an SAS doctor, you can have a discussion with your supervisor or clinical director about this.
